Penpot 2.5: The Devil is in the Details 💅

We’re excited to announce our 2.5 release! This time we bring multi-step gradients, comment notifications, new copy/paste options, and direct links to specific boards, among other new little big details that should be gems for designers and team collaboration.

Let’s dive in!

Multi-step gradients

Creating smooth, complex color transitions with multiple stops, will provide more creative options to customize designs. We’ve also added quick actions to flip and rotate gradients, plus a complete interface overhaul for gradient management inside the color picker. More control, more flexibility, more fun.

Comment mentions

No more lost comments! You can now tag teammates in the comments, and they’ll get a notification so they never miss direct feedback. Plus, now you can filter mentions—just select “Only your mentions” to quickly find discussions that matter to you.

On top of that, comments got a UI refresh, making everything clearer and better organized. And this is just the first batch of improvements—expect even more comment-related upgrades in the next Penpot release.

Manage notifications

You’ll find a new section in Your account where you can customize your notifications, choosing what to receive on your dashboard and via email.

Copy/paste styles, CSS, and text

Reusing styles should not be a repetitive task. With the new Copy/Paste options, you can quickly transfer fills, strokes, shadows, and other properties from one layer to another—or multiple layers at once.

We’ve also added more copy options:

  • “Copy as CSS” to grab the code instantly.
  • “Copy as text” if you just need the content.

Direct links to boards

It’s common to have multiple individual screens or designs spread across different boards in the same file. Get direct links to each board, making it easy to share them with team members or include direct links in documentation.

Resize board to fit

Resize a board to fit exactly the size of its content, just with one click.

New way to rename boards

Renaming a board from the layers list in the sidebar can sometimes feel unintuitive, so we’ve made it easier by allowing you to rename it directly within the design workspace.

Suggested Libraries

Now, when no libraries have been added yet, a few suggested ones will appear in the Shared Libraries section, providing quick access to resources for inspiration and a faster start to creating.

File state indicator redesign

The file status indicator was grabbing a bit more attention than it should. Its size and the red color during save transitions could even make it look like there was an error when everything was fine. We’ve moved and redesigned it to be less visually intrusive, so it doesn’t distract from what matters—creating amazing things in Penpot!

Did anything catch your eye? We’d love to hear what you think!

I’m already a massive fan of this release. Copy pasting properties saves so much time! And I love a multi-step gradient.

If anyone wants to see these features in action, I couldn’t help but include them in yesterday’s hands-on demo.

Resizing the board to fit already became a game-changer for me too
I didn’t even know how much I needed this feature

And let’s not forget the bug fixes  Thank you everyone for making Penpot more stable and friction-less!

I haven’t felt butterflies in my stomach since the day I unboxed Macromedia Freehand 8 as a teenager. I think I fainted; I can’t quite recall the details of installing that CD, but I remember being completely captivated. I’m experiencing that same excitement right now.

Please add smoothed corner radius to rectangles as Figma or sketch does. Lack of it ruins all my designs.

What do you mean?
corners

I assume fanged refers to the “squircle”. The “standard” rounded corners still give a sense of angularity where the straight line ends and the semi-curve begins.
