What do you expect from a color picker? for me it’s visualizing today’s unattainable colorspace colors from wild ICC profiles for print and screen, then knowing how we’d use these imaginary colors when the next color revolution arrives.
Didn’t want to make this yet another color picker plugin just yet but more than happy to if it fills a niche.

This is so nerdy, I love it. Also really useful if you’re trying to take a print colour (like a brand colour) into a digital format. I also really appreciate all the accessibility information for colour contrasts!

Wow the token studio legends have cool toys. Feels like a watershed moment for design insights and a huge unlock for how we use and think about our tokens (especially color)
edit and yeah you can take a print profile, plot it, even plot some photos against the chart and really think about how you transport ideas between mediums. Color generators are cool but discovery tools that generate the ideas first are the best!
As I have extensive experience making color scale generators and contrast shakers, during my user tests and interviews I discovered that there are many different insights and purposes behind generating color palettes.
Some of them use color palettes for marketing assets and materials, whereas others use them to start a project very quickly. The most nerdy ones are rarer on my end: those that can structure colors in roles, then make them ready for dev, and even push them to production.
When you said “get another color palette tool,” you’re right, because, in my opinion, a lot of plugin builders start by building a color palette plugin
In fact, it doesn’t matter because the tool you’re creating is for the user you want to target: newcomers, advanced users, very nerdy power users. The value proposition differs, which is why the methods for generating color palettes vary across Coolors, Supa Palette, UI Colors (and maybe me with UI Color Palette through that “garage playground” https://plugin.ui-color-palette.com).
There are some parts of your app that inspire me a bit; for example, the visualization of the selected color within the current gamut and the slider that shows where the lightness, hue, and chroma must be set to avoid going outside the gamut.
Very kind and empathetic feedback mate. I really appreciate it. And the bands was a hard one to decide on It looked “cool but intimidating” along the rings where I first tried it (now thin lines). but feels useful on the sliders.
Yes this was made for understanding and discovery more than instruction or application , it’s a heavy additional cognitive load to see the color spaces we can’t see best avoided in an app color picker rather than a full range of the limited set we can use on limited screen displays .
I’m actually trying to build a low to advanced palette creator from this (where you can set intentionally unique srgb cmyk spot and p3 versions of the same token so they best present in compromised forms and go loud in supported forms. that maturity tension between easy and aware is much much much much harder to balance than I expected originally
while this can map the gradient relationship to another color and plot image colors in a color space. It doesn’t have the simplified decision making (low cog load) or rigorous functional annd relational weighting among an entire set - for invested people (intentionally high cog load ).
And I’d hate to have to offer an intimidating ‘advanced / expert mode’ that discourages and makes color insights accessible.

I like both of them, making sophisticated things but with a simple approach. The balance is quite hard to find, as you said, because simplicity and complexity are two extremes, and it is easier to reach one side or the other.
Because colors are related to physics and optics, which are scientific disciplines. It looks simple to discover and learn, but at a deeper level, there are many complexities involved in undoing colors and making them accessible to everyone, on any monitor, on any computer.
For years, I have continued to find the right balance between providing a sophisticated way to generate a color scale for accessibility and preserving ease of use. This is because I’ve reached people with different purposes and perspectives
very well said, physics, in exactly the same way photographers talk about light. you have the physics of your environment (and eyeballs) affecting the reality you capture and how you perceive it.
I think all practices can come down to the hard limits of our brains, biology, and surrounding elements. Like why does a chef make the plates in a 10 course degustation meal tiny? physics - we otherwise explode before their artwork was complete !
