Hi everyone,
I made a plugin that’s been available on Penpot for a year, and in all that time I never posted a single official message on this forum. Releases shipped quietly, one after another, and you had no real way to know what was happening. Time to fix that ![]()
For those who don’t know it: UI Color Palette turns a few source colors into a complete, accessible color scale, directly inside Penpot. It works in alternative color spaces (LCH, OKLCH, OKLAB, HSLuv) so lightness stays consistent across every stop, checks contrast against WCAG 2.1 and APCA as you build, and exports the result as design tokens, CSS or Tailwind, ready for your Penpot libraries and for development. It’s an indie plugin, built and maintained by one person since 2022, and now running on Penpot, Figma, Sketch and Framer with the same codebase.
From now on, this thread is where I’ll keep you informed: new versions, what changed on the Penpot side specifically, and the WIP I’m not sure about yet. Follow it if you want to see where the plugin is going, and reply whenever something feels off.
To start properly, here’s what landed in 5.3.5:
Hue & chroma curves. The hue shift and chroma can now follow a linear curve (even distribution across all stops), a hyperbola (same threshold on both ends, symmetric and concentrated at the extremities), or a free curve (left and right thresholds set independently, for asymmetric control over shades and tints). Global or per color, and existing palettes are migrated automatically.
A rewritten LCH engine. Large palettes (like the official Tailwind one above) generate 82% faster and no longer block the UI
Update the plugin, rebuild one of your palettes with each curve, and tell me which one feels right. The defaults are still being tuned, and Penpot feedback is exactly what I’m missing.
