Why Tools Like Penpot Matter More Than Ever in Nigeria

Hey everyone :waving_hand:

I’m really glad to be part of this amazing community. My name is Sidiki, and I’ve been following the incredible growth of UX design across Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

Over the past few years, there’s been a real shift, more young Nigerians are exploring design, not just as a creative outlet but as a full-time career path. Universities, bootcamps, and even self-taught communities are producing incredibly talented UX designers who want to collaborate, build products, and solve real local problems.

The biggest challenge, though, is access, access to the right tools, affordable platforms, and resources that allow teams to design together without hitting paywalls or license restrictions.

That’s where I see Penpot making a huge difference. Being open-source and built for true design–developer collaboration, it gives every designer, whether they’re in Lagos, Abuja, or Enugu the freedom to create and share their work without limits.

I’d love to hear how others here see Penpot supporting new designers and communities in emerging regions. Has anyone else seen similar momentum in their local design scene?

Excited to connect and exchange ideas with everyone here :light_bulb:

Hi Sidiki,

Thanks for your post. :star_struck:

You mention:

We see it the same way :slightly_smiling_face:.

At Penpot, we are not just building the right tool, we share our passion for open knowledge too. To make sure everyone interested can join in, we’re developing a course on UI design, complete with hands-on tips for using Penpot.

Penpot is starting to become part of the curriculum tools in many schools. If you’re interested in bringing Penpot to your school, bootcamp, or meetup, I’d be happy to connect!

Hi Elena,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! It’s fantastic to hear that the Penpot team shares this vision so deeply.

I would truly love to bring Penpot not just to my own university, but to collaborate on introducing it to universities across Nigeria. The fact that it’s open-source and free removes the biggest barrier to entry for thousands of talented students here.

The work you’re doing from building the tool itself to developing open courses is exactly the kind of initiative that can shape a generation of designers and developers. I’m genuinely excited about the potential.

I am very interested in connecting to discuss how we can make this happen. I’ll send you a direct message to explore this further.

Thank you again for reaching out!

Amazing! Let’s connect. :star_struck:
