Some feedback after using penpot for a while

I’ve been using the product for a while now, and there are some features or quirks to fix that would make the product much better. (Some may be specific for self-hosted)

  1. Editing SVG colors - its quite a challenge, there are, sometimes multiple layers, and I have found at times, if each layer has its own property, even if the colors are all the same, I have to go through each layer of the SVG and edit the color manually.
  2. Sometimes holding ALT to see distance between two objects doesn’t work, and I have to do ALT+CTRL
  3. Fonts - I have many fonts installed on my local machine in the case that I don’t have internet access. But these fonts still try to load from google fonts, I would like to have an option to show only system fonts, or disable trying to load from outside sources entirely.
  4. There are times where the options for different layouts, such as flex alignment, won’t change or reflect on the design unless I update some other property first (even if not needed, I have to do this then revert the changed property back so I can see the new layout)
  5. When holding CTRL to select an object - if its an SVG, even if I select the area in its entirety, the sub layers of the SVG is selected only, not the container.
  6. When selecting an image to be inside an object - there is no way to reposition it or select the type of ‘background-cover’ property relating to CSS, or at least not that I could find

This is all I can think of for now…if I remember more or run into any others, I will reply to this thread.

I just remembered, also with the background image, it would be great if we can select options like ‘tile’ are ‘repeat’ and the direction, x, y, or both. For backgrounds that may have repeating patterns, this has been a major challenge to implement and display in the designs.

Another issue is when moving objects, for example two different text boxes, in most design applications when you move one to align left, it does a sort of ‘small snap’ or shows a guide showing its aligned…this makes it much easier than constantly having to select both items and using the alignment tools manually. (this works when using keyboard arrows, but when moving with mouse, it does not show alignment)
