Is there up-to-date comparison between figma and penpot

I’ve noticed that penpot introduced some limitations in free cloud version.
Is there comparison of figma vs penpot free tiers?
I’m interested in collaboration and sharing. For example, i can’t understand how to share penpot file with co-creators? Does it mean i need paid penpot subscribtion to do this? There is no share button in my files

Hey @skorphil

You probably don’t see a share button because you are in “Your Penpot,” which is your personal space. To collaborate and share projects, you need to create a team.

Regarding our new SaaS pricing, we designed it to empower teams in a fair and transparent way:

:white_check_mark: Free plan: all core features included, no trials or locked buttons
:white_check_mark: Fair: you only pay for active editors (beyond 8), with a monthly cap
:white_check_mark: Sustainable: payments help cover our infrastructure costs
:white_check_mark: Open source: you can also self-host if you prefer

As you mentioned in another post about your project, we also offer discounts for non-profits, education and open-source initiatives.

Yeah, you right - i needed to create another team. I thought “my penpot” is already a team actually. Now i see share button.

I didn’t know about some offers for open source non-profit projects. Where can i learn more about this?

I haven’t being using figma and penpot for awhile and now it’s quite tricky to catch up.

Seems like penpot offers free collaboration for up to 8 collaborators, while figma doesn’t provide collaboration in free tier. And when i used penpot last time, I loved that it allow sharing of design system in free tier, while figma doesn’t. This makes me favor penpot for my open-source small project, but i’m very disappointed that penpot does not provide “share with anyone” feature. Figma allows to share my design with people without figma accout and this is huge. For example, u can view my whole canvas: https://www.figma.com/design/FzUgHnhQhjFEJHNF84CKiP/Untitled?node-id=0-1&p=f

Thanks. But it’s a bit outdated - figma currently supports grid layout, but i havent tried it. Also comparison does not emphasize the key differences for me, like 8 free collaborators in penpot + ability to share design system in free tier.

I am favoring figma for solo design because of its performance(this is the mystery why penpot feel slugish). While consider penpot for “building in public” in hope that one day I will find design contributors to my tiny open source project. If this will happen, penpot’s free tier collaboration will do the job, while with figma it will be impossible to work together

Fair enough @skorphil!

Let me briefly comment on your three points:

  • Figma’s Grid Layout is not CSS Grid layout, it’s their own thing. Like AutoLayout tries to be FlexLayout but it isn’t. We’ll update the matrix chart to reflect that update nonetheless, thanks!
  • Penpot self-host is 100% free for unlimited users and teams. Period. On SaaS, you only start paying if you need these extra features: 30 days of file backups, 30 days of autosaved versions, Up to 25GB of storage and Exclusive early access to upcoming features. And then it’s only $7/mo for editors with a capped bil. See Penpot Pricing | Free and Enterprise Plans
  • Performance-wise, please read this important announcement It's time for Penpot to (almost) move away from the DOM We plan to release an open beta towards the end of September. BTW, have you seen this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7wQXksN_kk It’s revolutionizing how designers and developers create design systems in Penpot. And also this was shared today! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iWc-dwjA30

I’m looking forward to seeing you participe on the new rendering engine open beta!

That sounds great. Is there more technical description? Didn’t penpot use canvas API for rendering? Just svgs in DOM?
Wow, i didnt think, that DOM is able to make that much! I thought that trying to render design file in a DOM will explode the Earth and surprised it’s working )))

As for tokens and all that – i heard about those but do not have practical need at the moment. I quit my design job and currently developing hobby-like apps for education without digging much into design tokens and all that “serious” design stuff, focusing more on coding and using pre-made ui libraries as a solo developer. However I’m planning to start explore tokens from developer’s point of view and probably will experiment with them in penpot
