By chance is anyone more familiar with Penpot? I’m trying to do something in it (I’ve tried a couple different ways) and am failing at it.
It seems that Penpot doesn’t have some standard shapes so you end up having to draw them with the path tool (triangle for instance). Then, once you have the shape you don’t have the corner rounding feature available - it just isn’t there. So what do you do if you need a triangle with rounded corners? I even went and found a picture of a triangle with rounded corners and tried to trace over it with the path tool but the dimensions are impossible to get exact (and I need exact - precisely - mathematically symmetrical). I even tried to just draw it out with the path tool but again it is not possible to get it precisely symmetrical by doing it this way.
How do I get a triangle with rounded corners in Penpot when it has to be exactly symmetrical dimensions?
Well I can’t even use the app so I guess it isn’t a viable option. My company logo is going to be a triangle with rounded corners and no one seems to have an answer. Guess it doesn’t matter.
Hi!
I think the best solution is to use a specific vector drawing tool like Inkscape (open source and free) or Illustrator. You can then import the image as an SVG, maintaining its features and editability.
@Jake do you want the corners to stay the same radius when you resize the shape, or stay in proportion to the rest of the triangle?
If it’s the second option, I can make a little video showing you how I’d draw this shape using a vector path. It’s totally possible inside Penpot. The benefit of a logo is that you’ll probably only need to draw this shape once!
Well I hadn’t considered that. For the record I’m not really an experienced designer to think of quesions like that. I guess I would say I want it to look that same. I think I’m planning to design for different device types? Well I figured it has to ultimately be vector so it can be resized within the various sizes of a particular device.
From what I know so far, it’s not possible to round corners individually in shapes other than rectangles or squares, at least not parametrically (which is what you’re looking for, I assume, since you’re making precision a must). For this reason alone, I recommend using software specifically designed for vector drawing. You can do many other wonderful things with Penpot, but vector manipulation is still somewhat limited, although there are plugins that allow for more advanced tasks.
I imagine not having a specific triangle or triangle with rounded corners shape in Penpot is because the shapes follow what you can create in SVG. (Where there are rectangles and ellipses as basic shapes, but any other shapes have to be built from paths.)
You can easily create these shapes from paths in Penpot, you don’t need any advanced tools. But if you want a pre-built shape or a shape (not a rectangle) where you can input the radius of a corner, then it might be worth first creating that shape in another tool then importing it into Penpot. There are loads of Penpot plugins for different shapes, but I don’t think any of them include a triangle with rounded corners. It’s just not the most commonly-used shape, but I suppose that means it makes for a great logo!
This is how I would draw a rounded rectangle in Penpot using paths and guide shapes:
