Can't cut/join a path

I want to cut a path, but the icons are greyed out … any ideas how to get them to work?

You need to select the individual nodes that join the path you want to cut. Selecting two nodes (hold shift to multi-select, or drag a selection box around both nodes) will enable the cut and join path options in the toolbar.
