Assignment: Add colors to the article - UI Course Block 1

In this assignment, the task is to designing the color palette for our magazine or newspaper design using Penpot.

Here’s what I made. You can watch the video of me creating the color palette in the walkthrough video below.

You know, now I look back at it, I think I would make the background lighter :joy: Give the page some more contrast and help the blue colors pop more.

Here is what I made:

I went for a yellowy (is that a word?) green as the main color as I feel those are the colors that I associate with innovation the most (I’m still not sure about the look of it but I guess I would have to see it with pictures to really decide).

For the palette, I went with the complimentary colors of the darker shades of green to use as my foreground colors, they play nicely together and offer high contrast (I especially like the darker shades of blue on the light green). I also went for a gradient on the title which I think looks good.

I’m not sure if just plain shades of gray/black are just better for the text, but I’m happy with what I came up with.

Then you’ll like the assignment in the next unit

Yellowy green makes sense to me, and I love a made-up word. Yellow green is also a good way to describe it, though maybe the dominant colour is yellow? Then it would be a green yellow.

This works really well, it’s striking and original. Your choice to use a gradient on the title is unusual too, it creates a grey effect over the green yellow, and makes the contrast between text and background more subtle. Did you choose it because you felt the contrast between the title and background was too strong without the softness of the gradient?

I chose to use the gradient because otherwise it felt a bit flat to me, tried shadows and gradients and I liked the look of the gradient better.

Really looking forward to the rest of the course, I have enjoyed it a lot so far.

What a fabulous use of a gradient. It’s subtle and scrolling down the page would make it a gentle shift in color. Your typographic choices and high contrast text keep it very readable, which can be a challenge when working with background gradients.
