I need those few pixels to make sweet looking rectangles on my tiny screen. Having to toggle the ruler off with Shift+CMD+R every time I open a file is getting a little annoying.

This makes a lot of sense. I’ve raised this enhancement at GitHub as good first issue so it will eventually be shown on the GH contribute page, because it seems like it could be a good one for a community contribution.
