PRoblem connetcting to Penpot MCP server

I am trying to use Penpot remote MCP server with Opencode and LM Studio using local models (Qwen 3.6). I have enabled MCP in Penpot and created a MCP key. I added the remote MCP to Opencode, and put the url from the Penpot with MCP key to opencode.json. LLM sees the MCP server and tools that it can use. But when trying use the tools, and to for example tell the name of the selected Penpot document, it fails. LLM prints errors “ReferenceError: Unknown identifier ‘penpot’” etc. I have tested having document open in Vivaldi, Firefox and Penpot Desktop, but tool use still fails. What am I missing and how do I fix this?

Are you using Penpot SaaS or your own self-hosted Penpot?

@carolina.portugal I am using Penpot SaaS.

Inside your open Penpot file, does it show that the MCP connection is connected?

Yes, it says the MCP is connected.

After playing around for a while, I figured there is nothing wrong with the Penpot MCP, Opencode or LM Studio. It was the Qwen 3.6 that didn’t at first know how to properly interact with Penpot. When I taught it how it should be done, it managed to see the selected document name and selected board name.

And finally I tested it with the design token creation task, that was in the Penpot AI Kit. And Qwen 3.6 managed to do it too succesfully :slightly_smiling_face:
