Try making sure that in your Penpot Desktop settings, an instance is set and that instance is reachable on your internet.
Lol, thanks.
I only have the default penpot instance, there is no local one. So I assumed it defaults to that. I manually entered it, and now it does.
cheers
Odd, there is a warning notice in-place if the instance is blank.
I should probably add some stuff to detect if it can load the URL in the first place. In the rewrite I’m working on, I’ll be sure to improve warning and error messages if users encouter this.

There’s no longer a workable desktop version yet. Patience.
Hi. I really hope someone can pick this up. I think having a desktop app will appeal to power users and professionals.
- For me, some of my wish-list items would be to have the pallets (like text pallete, sizing pallete, layers pallete) something that can be in the sidebar, but you can also undock them and drag them to your left or right screen (For someone with more than one computer screen.) This would leave me to have the center screen solely for the canvases/ artboards. Right now I am spreading my one browser tab partially across my left and right screen (so the sidebars fit there) and leave the center for my artboards, but I still waste screen space with the from browser bar at the top of all screens. Floating palletes that can be undocked would also help when a user has computer screens at different heights.
- One of the things I like from Adobe XD is the real time previewer. When I move a shape on my canvas, the preview window is updated in real time. It seems more efficient than having to hit a refresh button.
- It would be nice if I can change my font preferences to only show my local fonts. Google fonts has a lot of garbage fonts, and I’d only like to see my local fonts by default. Maybe I can toggle on/off specific Google fonts to opt into them to show in my list? or have a separate filter to see Google fonts in the font pallete?
- It would be nice to change the default font for a new project.
- When choosing a font, it would be nice to see a preview of the font next to the font name, or on the font name.
- It would be nice if I can move the toolbar to the left of the screen, or even to my left screen. It just feels like it is another thing to get in the way of looking at my artboards.
Overall, I am really liking Penpot. I hope these suggestions can be seen as ideas to make it even better.
