Penpot Exporter 0.19.0— Link your External Libraries!
Hey everyone
We’re back with a crucial update for anyone working with Design Systems. The Penpot Exporter 0.19.0 is here, and it solves one of the biggest challenges in the migration process: keeping your files connected.
Highlights
Link External Libraries to your Design Files This release introduces a powerful new feature: the ability to link external libraries (your Design Systems) to your normal design files during the export process. Previously, bringing multiple files into Penpot could result in broken links between main components and their instances. Now, you can explicitly map these relations!
What to expect? A much more robust migration for multi-file projects, ensuring your Design System remains the single source of truth in Penpot.
We’d love your feedback! Try linking your libraries and let us know how it works for your team — your input helps us keep improving the plugin. If you encounter any issue please report it here so we can fix it: GitHub · Where software is built
We’re back with a new update focused on reliability and file optimization. The Penpot Exporter 0.20.0 is here, and it addresses one of the main friction points when moving large projects into Penpot.
Highlights
WebP Image Conversion: This is the core feature of this release. To significantly reduce the final file size without losing original quality, the plugin now automatically converts images to WebP. The goal is to minimize the number of files that fail to upload to Penpot due to being too heavy, making the migration of image-rich projects much more stable.
Vector Fixes: We’ve resolved several bugs related to corrupted vectors that were causing issues in some complex shapes during the export.
Text Property Improvements: We’ve fixed bugs where certain text layers were missing properties, ensuring your typography remains consistent.
What to expect? A much more efficient export process, especially for large files, and a higher success rate when importing your designs into Penpot.
We’d love your feedback! Try exporting your larger projects and let us know if the file size reduction helps your workflow. If you encounter any issues, please report them here: GitHub · Where software is built
We’re back with a new update to strengthen your Design System migration. The Penpot Exporter 0.21.0 focuses on a key improvement for your styles:
Figma Effect Styles as Shadow Tokens You can now transform Figma Effect Styles (drop and inner shadows) directly into Penpot shadow tokens. This update supports complex styles with multiple stacked shadows, preserving them as a single token in Penpot. We’ve also ensured that inner shadows are correctly imported as inset and all values pass Penpot’s validation, so you can edit your shadows in-place immediately after the export.
What to expect? A more accurate migration of your elevations and depth styles, keeping your Design System’s structure intact and editable.
We’d love your feedback! Try exporting your effect styles and let us know if they behave as expected. If you encounter any issues, please report them here: GitHub · Where software is built
We are back with a new update to make your migration from Figma to Penpot even more seamless. This release focuses on preserving your design structure and expanding the types of projects you can bring over.
Highlights
Compatibility for Figma Slots: Although Penpot doesn’t have direct compatibility for Figma slots, you won’t lose your designs anymore. These are now transformed into similar elements within Penpot, ensuring the structural integrity of your files.
New! Figma Slides Support (.deck): We’ve added support for Figma Slides files! This is the first version of the exporter for presentations, and while it doesn’t cover every single case yet, you can now start bringing your decks over to Penpot.
What to expect? A much more robust migration for complex components and the ability to work on your presentations directly within Penpot.
We’d love your feedback! Give these new features a try and let us know how they work for your team. If you encounter any issues, please report them here: GitHub · Where software is built
Penpot Exporter 0.23.0— Editable Shapes, Tables, and Better Error Handling!
Hey everyone
We’re back with a new update to make your migration from Figma to Penpot more seamless and robust. While this release focuses on the technical side of things under the hood, it brings major improvements to how complex elements are handled and how you can troubleshoot issues.
Highlights
Editable Figma Shapes with Text: Instead of exporting Figma ShapeWithText nodes as flat, rasterized PNGs, they are now converted into editable Penpot groups containing a path and a text shape. Your content remains fully vector and tweakable!
Figma Table Nodes Support: Tables are no longer flattened into rasters. They are now exported as editable Penpot frames with grid layouts, making it much easier to preserve and work on your layouts.
New Error & Crash Reporting: No more infinite freezing! If an export fails, the plugin will now show a dedicated error screen. This is designed to help you easily report the issue so we can debug it. We’ve also fixed crashes related to complex vector networks and optimized our vector translation pipeline.
What to expect? Much more stable slide and layout migrations, fewer plugin crashes on complex files, and a clearer way to handle edge-case errors. We’d love your feedback! Give these improvements a try on your tables and shapes and let us know how they work for your team. If you encounter any issues, please report them here so we can fix them: GitHub · Where software is built
Penpot Exporter 0.24.0— FigJam Support and Major Performance Optimizations!
Hey everyone
We’re back with a brand new update that opens up completely new workflows and introduces important stability tweaks under the hood. The Penpot Exporter 0.24.0 is here to make your migrations smoother and more reliable!
Highlights
FigJam Files Support: This release introduces an exciting new feature: support for FigJam files! You can now export your stickies and connectors directly into editable Penpot shapes, preserving your brainstorming sessions.
Faster Image Exports: We’ve optimized exports for image-heavy files. By fetching image bytes from Figma using a small concurrency pool instead of one at a time, your project exports should now be noticeably faster.
Better Memory Management: Large, image-heavy files were causing some export crashes due to high memory usage. To mitigate this, we’ve lowered peak memory during the process by decoding images with createImageBitmap (releasing pixels deterministically) and buffering the output zip as Blobs instead of keeping it all on the JS heap. We also fixed a specific crash on grids with non-finite numeric values (like those from deleted variables).
What to expect? A brand new capability to bring your FigJam boards over to Penpot, along with a more robust and efficient experience when handling larger files.
We’d love your feedback! Try exporting your FigJam files and heavy projects, and let us know how these performance tweaks work for your team. If you encounter any issues or edge cases, please report them here so we can keep polishing the plugin: GitHub · Where software is built
Penpot Exporter 0.24.2: Figma Auto-Layout API Fixes & Stability Patch!
Hey everyone
We just pushed a maintenance update to fix a few export crashes reported by the community. Figma recently updated their Grid auto-layout API, which was causing exports to fail for some files. We’ve patched that along with a few other edge cases to keep your migrations running smoothly.
Highlights
Figma Auto-Layout & Grid Fix: Changes in Figma’s auto-layout API were causing full export failures. Affected frames now gracefully fall back to default track sizing so your export finishes without errors.
Smarter Color & Gradient Handling: Gradient stop offsets are now clamped to match Figma UI behavior. We also fixed an issue where unresolved color library entries would break the export with a “expected valid color” error.
Clean State Management: Restored internal nesting depth tracking with proper cleanup, making sure an aborted export doesn’t leak state into your next run.
What to expect? A much more reliable export experience that handles unexpected color data and Figma API shifts without crashing.
We’d love your feedback! Give 0.24.2 a try and let us know how it works for you. If you run into any issues, please report them on GitHub so we can keep polishing the plugin!
