# Figma Config Event 2025 and Penpot Journey

Happy for your excitement for PenPot but the reason you listed for Figma’s inspiration from PenPot seem out of place?

- Redesigned UI (UI3) in Figma was developed independently from PenPot, PenPot did make a sussy post about it after the first public release: [Penpot discarded Figma's UI3 approach more than a year ago](https://community.penpot.app/t/penpot-discarded-figmas-ui3-approach-more-than-a-year-ago/5995)
- Developer Mode: was in beta in 2024, the development started in 2021, when they acquired Visly (which became the Figma’s dev mode team): [https://www.crunchbase.com/acquisition/figma-acquires-visly--23fd1198](https://www.crunchbase.com/acquisition/figma-acquires-visly--23fd1198)
- Smart Grids - this is new, but the implementation is all in C++ for Figma’s internal layout engine, a much larger commitment than PenPot leaning on the browser’s layout engine
- Plugins - was released in 2020, back then, this was the last major feature Figma built to catch up to Sketch
- Comments dedicated panel - existed since 2017’s release in some shape, but went through a major rehaul in 2021
